#15: Articuno

Articuno is the first legendary Pokémon in the National Pokédex, and likely the second one you'll encounter in the Red and Blue games. Of the legendaries in the first generation, Articuno is my favorite. One reason might be due to its typing. Early in the Pokémon era, ice-type was a rare type and the only one you could get easily was Lapras, whose main type was water, anyway. Articuno may not be the strongest bird of the three (the other two are Zapdos and Moltres), but it's possibly the most interesting one. It looks so... freezing cold, like it's going to freeze you when it flies by! Somehow, Articuno appeals to me more than Zapdos and Moltres. That's probably because Zapdos and Moltres' designs are a little bit too rough and 'too much', whereas Articuno's design has been kept simple. Maybe that's exactly the reason why I like Suicune more than Entei and Raikou, too. I always find myself using Articuno rather than the other two birds when going through FireRed and LeafGreen. It's not really diverse, but it can decently pull off some moves on both sides of the attacking spectrum, with a slight preference to special attack. You'll find yourself teaching Articuno mainly ice- and flying-type moves, and that's just great. You can use Articuno for some powerful ice- and flying-type attacks like Ice Beam and Fly, and the rest of your team for the rest. I just use it because I love this legendary bird for no apparent reason. I just love it, period. Oh yeah, definitely check out the fan art below (click on the image to enlarge it, or drag it to another tab). Awesome drawing of an as-good-as-real-made legendary bird trio!
